Larissa’s 4-star review:
I came here to get an early-morning weekday breakfast with the always-lovely Lizzie G this morning, as Bea's is just around the corner from my office AND is open at 8am.
I feel, though, that my breakfast visit gives me quite a different perspective of Bea's than everyone else, because I didn't have to fight for a table (the place had just opened when we popped in) and I didn't get any cakes or the 'afternoon tea' experience which everyone else seems to come to Bea's for.
What I can say, though, is that Bea certainly wooed me with her warm and gooey porridge with help-yourself toppings. Toppings available: dried fruit, cinnamon and sugar, brown sugar, milk, honey, dessicated coconut and mixed nuts. Toppings on my porridge: dried fruit, cinnamon and sugar, brown sugar, milk, honey, dessicated coconut and mixed nuts.
What can I say? I'm a sucker for a buffet.
Bea's interior was modern and dark with subtle feminine notes. Yeah, um. That's all I really have to say about that. Just thought I'd throw it out there.
Being the piggies--I mean good Yelpers--that we are, Lizzie and I went back for a cheese and herb scone. A pitch-perfect cheese and herb scone. Crumbly yet soft, delicious and totally nom-able: I put some leftovers in my bag to have as a heavenly mid-morning snack at my desk. Scone-alicious!
I drank some JING English Breakfast tea, which I was pretty stoked for, having just heard about JING via the Yelp Talk boards yesterday. Sorry to say, I wasn't particularly blown away by the tea, but that could just be down to unnecessarily high expectations. Had I not just researched JING tea online the day before and had been expecting it to be the kind of tea that Jesus serves to Jane Austen at the Big Tea House in the Sky, I probably would have happily gluggled my pot from Bea's this morning and said, 'Mmm, tea, caffeine, more please!' But, there you have it.
I do have to say: the rotating lunch menu which is available to view online looks AMAZING. I may just have to pop up here for a takeaway lunch sometime soon.
