Nima Delicatessen

If you like to spend money on quality food, then you'll be happy here. Food from the Far East Middle East, and Europe are all on offer. I'm usually in here for breadcrumbs, falafel mix, vegetarian burger mix, tahini, and my new favourite-Gits' ready meals. No giggling at the back! These are Indian-made authentic boil-in-the-bag vegetarian meals that are ready in 4 minutes and are as ideal for a lunchtime treat at home as they are for festivals and/or camping.

The longer I stay in here the more things I'll see and buy, which I'm happy with, as I save loads by buying my basics at small supermarkets, so I can spend more on proper luxury! Like Belgian chocolate cups that you can use as the basis for bite-size desserts, or for liquors. And pavlova bases to pile Summer fruits on for a pudding to share.

In the chilled cabinet are cooked meats and cheeses. At the counter you can buy Iranian sweets and a box of cigarettes. Nima is traditional, exotic and friendly. As it's one of Moseley's most long-standing independents, it also feels righteous to shop here. You'll appreciate the foods and they'll appreciate your custom.

This is one of the gems in Moseley.
A good old fashioned delicatessen run by a husband and wife team. They have a wonderful choice of cheeses and cold meats and some really great pasta that I have trouble getting elsewhere.
The place has a wonderful atmosphere too which makes you unaware whether its 2014 or 1954.
I really love this place but I am scared that unless people use it they will suffer at the hands of the 'big boys'.
Support deli's like this, they are a rare and wonderful thing.

Another business which Moseley can rightly be proud of, plenty of character and fantastic fresh food make Nima Delicatessen a real winner. The shop looks great from the outside and there is a real independent and homely feel inside, made all the better by the great owners who always greet each customer with a generous smile. It's not cheap here but independent delis rarely are and if you are after specialist food stuff of a high standard then you should be prepared to pay a little extra for the privilege. Also there are few cheap establishments in Moseley these days as it has become a very affluent and upmarket area, therefore Nima is simply reflecting its surroundings. If you're tired of sub standard, less than fresh supermarket fare then try out this fantastic little deli and I'm sure your taste buds will thank you for it.

Actual delicatessens are rare as hens teeth in Birmingham, which is probably why Nima has thrived and been a fixture of the main drag of Moseley Village for so long. I've been using the place for over 10 years and I'm told it was there long before that.

There is a fine selection of olive oils, pastas, patés, sauces, cold meats and cheeses - everything you'd expect - plus a few things that might take you by surprise (and may even tickle your taste buds).

Being situated next to Moseley Park it's the perfect place to nip in to get some olives, cheese and fresh flat breads, or whatever else you fancy for a hastily arranged picnic. It's not the cheapest but if you want to watch the pennies there are two supermarkets directly opposite.

It's always worth having a look in the window as Nima is one of the few shops these days (except for Newagents and The Co-Op) that will place small ads. So, if you're looking for a place to rent, or a local service, then chances are the people selling that service have placed a card in Nima's window.

Nima's is a delightful delicatessen that has been a feature in my life for many years.

It is full of character and surely enhances Moseley's diverse parade of independent stores. I imagine Nima's being more at home in a dusty back street of a continental European capital than in inner-city Birmingham. But I suppose that is part of the charm of Moseley - it offers a place where unique businesses like Nima's can flourish as they are appreciated by the cultured residents whom have very fine taste.

The Baklava (an ancient sweet originating in the Ottoman/Byzantine empire) that they sell there is exquisite and there are few places in Birmingham that would provide a worthy substitute (if anything at all). They have a wonderful range of exotics foods, which will satisfy anyone who loves the rich, hearty and wholesome diet of cultures from warmer climates.

One you've acquired yourself some delicious delicacies courtesy of Nima's, chuck all of your goods into a wicker basket, grab yourself a bottle of wine and find yourself somewhere beautiful to eat it all. If not in southern Italy, then Moseley park is a more convenient alternative. Bellissimo!

We popped in to Nimas on Sunday to get a few delicacies for a quick picnic in a nearby park.


This brief visit soon descended into a cacophony of 'oohs' and 'aahs' once we saw the fine range of cheese on display. In addition they have a formidable selection of chutneys, preserves, spices, plus homemade fresh bagels and bread.


Being a Sicilian deli they also make their own pastries, which can be gazed at through the window and are every bit as tasty as they appear.


It's the kind of place where you have every intention of just popping in for one item, then come out £16 worse off, but with a carrier bag of delights.


I urge caution for those such as myself with little to no willpower in front of a deli counter, but this also serves as a hearty recommendation. I will definitely be back!
