Anderson and Hill is a wonderful delicatessen and fine food store based in Birmingham's impressive Great Western Arcade.
Gary Anderson is there 6 days a week and he's a really friendly and helpful guy. The small store is absolutely rammed with stock but demostrates a great use of space and isn't too cluttered. Dark wooden shelving and hand written black boards give the store a traditional feel.
Being purveyors of fine foods, they have all the things you would expect such as many varieties of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, cured meats, olives, cheese and condiments but they also stock their own branded coffees, a selection of local real ales, weird and wonderful spirits from far flung shores, Champagne, pastas, biscuits and lots more.
Gary serves made to order, gourmet Ciabatta sandwiches throughout the day with fillings such as Serrano ham, Manchego cheese and roasted peppers. The sandwiches are chunky and delicious with so many continental cheeses and charcuterie meats to choose from.
Anderson and Hill is the perfect place to buy a selection of items to be presented as a gift or you can even request a bespoke hamper. And yes, some of the items are fairly pricey but the price is reflective of the quality. If you don't like it then go to Asda.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ron H.Birmingham, United Kingdom134326314 May 2016
Superb sandwiches. A bit more expensive than some competitors in the vicinity but the sandwiches here are in a different class. The quality of the meats and cheeses is top drawer.
Although all of the sandwiches are made fresh they are now knocking up a batch for the lunchtime rush which has sped up the service considerably.
I'll be back very soon...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ad T.Tipton, United Kingdom2620626822 May 2012
This great store is a great addition to Birmingham's shopping complex.
These people know their food, know what they're talking about and are very positive. They sell fine food and wine.
I tried the special sun dried tomatoes, and they were lovely!! They offer a great selection and plethora of other delights such as Bacon jam!, and many other special food items that you can't buy in most shops, other than this specialist.
Hampers are also available in the old fashion type cases, together with flours and pastas sourced worldwide.
The items available will make your Christmas that extra bit special, or for that extra special occasion!
This is not just any retailer, this is Anderson and Hill retailer!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Claire T.Birmingham, United Kingdom721241 Feb 2017
The sandwiches at Anderson & Hill are amazing. They are fairly expensive for a sandwich (around £4 - £4.50) but well worth it - they are huge and stuffed full of amazing, quality deli ingredients. My personal recommendation is the Iberian, but you can't go wrong with any of them.
Aside from the sandwiches, the shop is packed with tempting deli items and I rarely leave without picking up a treat! It's great to have such a good deli close to my work.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jenny E.Cradley Heath, United Kingdom2526025318 May 2012First to Review
Like cheese? Like wine? Like fancy foodstuffs in general? If the answer is "yes", then let me introduce you to Anderson and Hill: quite possibly Birmingham's finest delicatessen. This gem of a deli is situated in the wondrous Great Western arcade.
It is a treasure trove of gastronomic delights. The assistants have a great knowledge of their products and will talk to you about them with unbridled enthusiasm.
The cheese counter is stocked with a wide choice of local cheeses, as well as a great selection of continental cheeses. The Pecorino with black truffle is divine.
There are all sorts of lovely nibbles to peruse - local meats, posh crisps, paté, foie gras, local honey...
...you name the gourmet treat and they'll have it.
The wine and real ale selection is good, as is the range of Italian groceries.
Oh, and they let you sample the cheeses. Bliss.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Paul T.Birmingham, United Kingdom65321 Dec 2013
Amazing! They prepared me a veggie sandwich very quickly which is the best sandwich I've ever eaten ever. It was so fresh and tasty I'm going back today to get another one.

It smells of cheese as soon as you walk in - In fact before you walk in - so it's unlikely you'll leave without some!
Other than that there is an array of mainly continental foods and I walked away with some fab sour dough crisp breads and some crackers for a whisky tasting just across the arcade.
A great treat stop in the Snow Hill end of the the Great Western Arcade AKA 'indie heaven'Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Rob S.Wolverhampton, United Kingdom16114 Jan 2014
This place is amazing, they sell the best cheeses from local cheddars to national award winning ewes cheese. They are very personal and will endeavour to help you. They also sell a selection of teas and coffees as well as doing lunch time hand made sandwiches at very reasonable prices.

This deli is a little treasure trove of goodies. I recently had the pleasure of discovering this place and purchasing my lunch from here. I didn't manage to leave the shop without buying some lovely cheese for dad.
Price ranges vary but there are some very affordable and reasonable choices which, judging by the look of the shop, I was surprised by. The shop looks very lush and continental.
The service was impeccable. Whilst I flapped about, over excitedly questioning the poor chap about all sorts of things I had never seen before, he calmly and charmingly responded with the answers whilst making my sandwich. The sandwich was a Roman, I recommend it highly.
If it's grabbing a bite to eat for lunch, picking up some meats or cheese for your fridge at home, finding a special ingredient, or picking up a present for someone special, then this place is the definitive answer. I won't be buying cheese from the super markets any longer!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (PR32…)Birmingham, United Kingdom0231 Jan 2012
Fantastic deli with the most helpful staff ever samples of various cheeses to taste no problem, and we were able to get a Christmas gift voucher for friends even though they don't really do them (yet?).
